Women’s cricket tourney in Chennai
Chennai, Feb 20: The stage is set for the quadrangular series women’s cricket tournament, featuring India, New Zealand, England and world champions Australia, beginning here tomorrow. This is the second international women’s tournament to be conducted in India, since the merger of women’s cricket activities with the BCCI. The matches will be held at Chepauk and IIT-Chemplast grounds simultaneously. Speaking at a press conference here last night, Indian team captain Mithaili Raj said facilities for the players had improved after the merger with the BCCI.
“We have got better facilities now, even travel and accommodation are good,” she said. She also cautioned the players not to take the other teams lightly. “It’s going to be tough but challenging,” she said. Haidee Tiffin is leading New Zealand team, Karen Rolton Australia and Charlotte Edwards, England. All three teams are well prepared with a couple of spinners in each team, the captains said.
India take on England in the opener tomorrow at Chepauk, while Australia take on New Zealand at the IIT-Chemplast ground. The final will be played at Chepauk on March 5.
