Tamil search engine

Guruji.com, a Tamil search engine for the Internet, was launched on Wednesday.

“The advantages that guruji.com has over other Tamil search engines are the virtual keyboard facility and search across Tamil websites that use various fonts,” Anurag Dod, the engine’s chief executive officer, told reporters.

When a user logs on to www.guruji.com, he or she can type keywords for the information he is looking for by clicking the virtual alphabet keys using the mouse. “In Google Tamil, the user transcribes the Tamil word in English to look for information. Here, you can type in Tamil,” Mr. Dod explained. The search facility would help a large number of users who are more comfortable using the vernacular.

City-specific information on education, entertainment and eating out are available offline in English as a `local search’ option. Gaurav Mishra, co-founder, said the next wave of growth for Internet in India would be powered by the growth of vernacular content.
