Meeting on food handlers’ licences

Officials of the Chennai Corporation held a discussion on Saturday with hoteliers in the city on the proposed move to introduce food handlers’ licences for waiters and cooks.

Members of traders’ associations for lodges, hotels, restaurants and teashops later met Mayor M. Subramanian. The Mayor told the hoteliers that the new scheme would offer medical tests and vaccinations every year for the food handlers, and issue licences.

“There are about 1.51 lakh food handlers in the city. If they are medically fit and are trained in hygienic handling of food, local residents and tourists will enjoy frequenting hotels,” the Mayor said.

As a first step, doctors at the Corporation’s laboratories in Thiruvanmiyur, EVR Salai, Perambur, Valluvar Kottam, Otteri and Ripon Building would perform a general examination to identify infections. ECG, X-ray, urine, blood sugar and cholesterol tests would also be conducted.

In the second stage, food handlers will be vaccinated, given de-worming tablets and offered treatment for any infections. In the last phase, training will be offered in food storage. Source: Hindu
