Chennai on terror alert, HUJI terrorists in city

Central intelligence agencies have alerted the Tamil Nadu government about a possible terror strike in Chennai prompting authorities on Monday to beef up security in markets and crowded places.

The Central Government advisory about a possible terror attack was issued to the Tamil Nadu DGP, Chennai City Police Commissioner Nanjil Kumaran said. The intelligence inputs were based on several telephone intercepts over a period of time.

According to sources, Central intelligence agencies have found out that three to four Harkat-ul-Jihad-e-Islami (HuJI) activists are holed up in Chennai waiting for orders to carry out a strike in the busy and crowded areas of the city.

Chennai City Police Commissioner, however, said the police did not have any specific information about an operation of the Bangladesh-based HuJI, hiding in Chennai.

In Delhi, Government sources said all states, including Tamil Nadu, have been alerted about a possible strike in crowded areas of major cities, following the recent terrorist attacks in Hyderabad.
