‘Chennai’ garbage clearance within a week’
Stung by critisism from political parties and enviromental action groups for not clearing garbage in Chennai, Neel Metal Fanalca, awarded the contract to clear garbage in three zones today said normalcy would be returned within a week.
The company, a Joint Venture of Neel Metal Products, New Delhi, and Fanalca, a South African Company, said they were given just 12 hours to take charge of garbage clearance from the previous contractor, whose term ended on August 25 last.
“Though we were awarded the contract in July 25, we were given access to the land where the garbage has to be dumped only on August 26. There was some delay in procuring garbage bins as the company from which we ordered it faced a fire accident. This led to the problem”, S Pattabhiraman, vice president of the company told reporters.
The company had now decided to import the bins, which would be in place within a week, he said.
Neel Metal was clearing 1200 tonnes of garbage in three divisions and was concentrating on door to door collection, he said.
Political parties had critisised Chennai Corporation for the delay in garbage clearnace. The AIADMK had organised a ‘clear garbage’ agitation, in which a number of party workers were arrested.
Chennai Corporation officials and police had cleared the garbage in the last three days. The Corporation had warned the company of cancellation of contract if it did not take steps for proper garbage clearance.
