Jewellery is perhaps the only favourite of people of all age groups. It’s evident from the fact that South India, especially Tamil Nadu, contributes to 50 per cent of gold procured in the country.

However, retail jewellers here do not have much access to the manufacturers. Of late, the Indian industry is booming as the nation has beaten Italy in manufacturing besides being the largest gold consumer with 800 tonnes per year. The diamond demand has increased to 59 per cent this year.

Announcing the third edition of the exhibition as “a business-to-business trade fair,” LKS Syed Ahamed, president of the MJDMA, said that the exhibition was aimed at bringing together retailers and 200 manufacturers across the country under one roof and facilitate retail sellers to source their jewellery. There would be no jewellery sale and it was not open to public, he said.

Visitors from other countries, including Sri Lanka and Malaysia, were expected. With the hallmark of gold jewellery becoming mandatory in January 2008, quality gold would be more assured, Mr. Ahamed added.

Uday Kumar Vummidi, vice-president of MJDMA, said that India was the third largest diamond manufacturer and market for platinum was also on the rise.

K. Shivram, vice-president of World Gold Council, said that the expo would shrink the distance between wholesalers and retailers in the field. Of late, gold bullion was most sought after investment. This year’s expo would introduce three designs in gold, diamond, platinum and antique jewellery.

Vaishali Banerjee, country manager of Platinum Guild India, and Srinath, area manager of South Diamond Promotion Service, Diamond Trading Corporation were also present. For details, contact 2538 1982 or logon to www.gjiie.com.
