Kelvikkuri future a question mark

Kelvikkuri's future a question mark

It’s a film that is bound to be noticed, if not for anything else, at least its title which is Kelvikkuri or the question mark. A movie on custodial deaths, Kelvikkuri has managed to get on the wrong side of the Censor Board, which has questioned the very premise of the film. The Board has refused to certify the film claiming that it portrays the police in a bad light. But the film’s director Jailani feels otherwise about it. “They are banning it for a reason that I think is unreasonable and that hurts all the more,” Jailani says. The Board’s examining committee, which includes a police officer, has objected to certain scenes in particular like when the hero takes the police commissioner hostage.

“Immature minds are bound to get some inspiration and there is a likelihood of them taking the law into their hands,” Regional Officer, CBFC, Babu Ramaswami says. But this is not the first time when a hero has taken the law in his hands to save the day. For instance, in Kamal Hassan’s Nayagan, the protagonist beats up a corrupt cop and murders him in broad day light or in Vijayakanth’s Ramana where a self-righteous hero murders the police commissioner. Such arguments have left the director of the film with yet another question – should he appeal to the revising committee, which is again headed by the Regional Officer or appeal to a higher authority in Delhi?

“Now the money is invested but the fate of the film is decided by the Censor Board,” Jailani says. With the Censor Board remaining firm on its stand that the movie does not merit certification, it seems the fate of the film is likely to remain a ‘question mark’. Source:CNN-IBN
