Increase in Emirates Airline flights from Chennai

Emirates Airline announced a progressive increase of its flights out of Chennai from eight per week to 14 by October 28, the start of the winter season in the aviation industry.

Currently, there are nine Emirates flights to Dubai from the city, with an average occupancy of 85 percent.

The seat capacity will increase by 1,400 a week with the introduction of additional flights from the city.

By August 1 there will be 11 flights a week, said Emirates sales manager – Tamil Nadu, Sudhir Sukumaran.

This is part of a countrywide expansion of Emirates flights from 71 to 85 a week from eight Indian cities by October 28. These include Chennai, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Kolkata and Delhi.

After Mumbai (which will have three flights a day by the beginning of winter) Chennai will have the most traffic from Emirates with two flights a day.

Mr. Sukumaran said the expansion is as per bilateral agreements signed between India and the UAE to expand the Emirates network in India.

“India generally has a good load factor, which is why we are undertaking the expansions… With the signing of the free trade agreement between India and the Gulf Co-operation Council the traffic in this sector is poised to increase further,” he said.

The profile of the passengers had expanded from job seekers to businessmen and leisure travellers in the recent years.

Emirates currently has a fleet of 105 (consisting of Airbus A330 and Boeing 777 aircrafts) that fly to 90 destinations worldwide. They will introduce five new destinations at the end of the year, including Venice (already launched), New Castle, Sao Paulo, Toronto and Houston.

Mr. Sukumaran said Emirates would continue to offer competitive fares.

The airline is currently offering excess baggage allowance to students going to its European and USA destinations.

And first class and business passengers travelling beyond Dubai get two nights at the Ritz Carlton or one night at Emirates Towers free respectively.
