Girl Child Day at US Consulate
The US Consulate General, Chennai, will be organising a potpourri of events in commemoration of International Girl Child Day on Friday, September 21, 2007 from 10 a.m. to 12 Noon.
The programme will include a photo competition, photo exhibition, a street theatre play and sharing by Munniama (a rehabilitated temple prostitute) followed by the screening of the film ‘Children for Sale’ in the afternoon.
The photo competition will be on the theme ‘We also can do’ and will be inaugurated by Ragini Gupta, Consul for Cultural Affairs, US Consulate General, Chennai. Students who are studying in the disciplines of Visual Communication and Social Work from various colleges in Chennai will be submitting and presenting their photographs. The collection of photographs will embody the essence of International Girl Child Day. P C Sreeram, eminent photographer, will judge the photo competition along with a panel of judges.
MCCSS, an ecumenical organisation, is collaborating with the US Consulate on the programme. MCCSS is a non-governmental organisation which works with a vision to promote human dignity and social justice to the marginalised urban poor. Strongly focused on the rights of women and girl children, the organisation is providing a service which promotes participation, equality and empowerment. MCCSS works on rehabilitating commercial sex workers and trafficked women.
