Dell’s Chennai plant to start ops mid ’07

Dell India will soon launch its first manufacturing plant at Sriperumbudur in Chennai, which is expected to begin operations in the mid of 2007. The plant will begin the production of desktop computers in the first half of this year. It will have an intial capacity of 4,00,000 desktops units per year.

In December last year, the company formally launched the project in Chennai. The plant will be set up with an initial investment of $30 million and is expected to spur more information technology suppliers to locate in the area. An additional 100 acres have been set aside in the hi-tech park for more suppliers to join in.

Talking to FE, Stephen Fellice, president, Asia-Pacific, Dell, said, “Looking at the growing Indian technology market and the high penetration of computers in India, we chose to set up a plant here.”

India is one of the fastest growing markets in the Asia-Pacific region. We have three other manufacturing units in the Asia-Pacific region.” The company has two manufacturing units in Xiamen, China and one in Panang, Malaysia.

Dell has an overall market share of 6-7% in India, a 19% share in servers and 14% share in commercial business. The company will initially target commercial tie-ups for desktops with mid-large size companies across the country. “We will not only target the corporates but also educational institutions, the government sector, BFSI and households, which would be on the roll simultaneously,” Fellice added.

The company has over 14,000 employees across the country with its call centres in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mohali and Gurgaon, and research and development centre in Hyderabad.
